Did you know …
The Akoya oyster is a bivalve mollusc that produces some the worlds most beautiful pearls! Akoya pearls have an extremely high lustre and are generally white in colour with a beautiful rose overtone.
Akoya oysters are farmed in NSW Australia. To grow a pearl, a bead (nucleus) is inserted into the oyster. The oyster is then returned to the sea for 10-18 months until a pearl is naturally formed and large enough to be harvested. The quality of the pearl depends on the quality of the oyster and it’s environment. A pristine water environment and excellent living condition are essential, making Akoya pearls the most sustainable gemstone.
